ACT III / THE ACADEMY / The Chthonic at Eleusis is an installation by Scott Benzel.

Within the space of our walls, this set will trace two traditions of theater back to ancient Greece.
On the one hand, a theater of education, of the rational, the Apollonian strain of Plato’s Academy. On the other, the chthonic strain of the Mysteries at Eleusis, an early mystery cult worshipping Demeter and committed to irrationality, a theater of entertainment.

Both facets of early theatricality will exist in one space and over the course of the sun’s setting (from 6:30 to 9), the show will go through a choreographed transformation from the ‘daylight’ of the Academy to the ‘nightlight’ of the Mysteries.

This stage of sorts will host a series of performances & events. Including:

A set of dinners by Liz Glynn on October 12th &13th.

A|D, a meal in five acts by Liz GlynnMusic orchestrated by Scott Benzel, performed by Corey Fogel and Giles Miller. As part of Scott Benzel’s current exhibition The Academy / The Chthonic at Eleusis
“…most important of all is the structure of the incidents.
For Tragedy is an imitation, not of men, but of an action and of life,
and life consists in action, and its end is a mode of action, not a quality.”
