3 Metallothionein genes The nomenclature, in general, follows that of multiple forms of metallothionein. For cases in which the isolation and sequencing of an isometallothionein-encoding gene precede the identification, isolation and sequencing of the protein, the gene will be designated as metallothionein followed by an arabic numeral and a letter specifying, if feasible, the structural correspondence of the amino acid sequence (derived by decoding the nucleic acid sequence) to a known isometallothionein.

However, accumulation of polymeric Cu-containing forms has been observed too in lysosomes isolated from neonatal human liver (49) and from the liver of Bedlington Terriers affected with inherited copper toxicosis (50). There is also immunohistochemical evidence for the occurrence of MT in the nucleus during fetal development (51,18). MTs from eukaryotic and prokaryotic microorganisms and from plants resemble the mammalian forms by their conspicuous metal and cysteine content and by the occurrence of metal-thiolate cluster structures.
