The type’s early promise evaporated when it suffered heavy losses during the Battle of Britain but later in the war, when it was deployed as a radarequipped night fighter against the RAF’s heavy bomber fleet, it became a fearsome hunter – picking off Allied aircraft as they traversed occupied Europe to and from their targets.
