Well, I invited her to join us, to make it a group, and she did. Fred walked me home from the juke joint and that’s how we got started.  , ,   My sister just knew I had married below myself. Fred was coming around our apartment, and I learned that he was very interested in boxing; he had boxed before I met him. On dates during the latter part of my senior year in Walters high school we borrowed Fred’s Dad’s car and went to Lawton to watch my aunt’s boyfriend box. At the time, Fort Sill had a big Indian boxing team who were mostly Comanches.

I spent most of the summer and the whole school year with them. Mr. Nix was so quiet and distant that I became a companion for Mrs. Nix. I can’t really remember much about what it was like staying with them, but I recall that I didn’t enjoy it because they were so different, white folks, and there was no hustle and bustle around. Fortunately I was dating, and they allowed me to go out, so I had a real great school life. I got involved in the school clubs and took part in a great many activities.

When Ray came back home right in the middle of the school year, they just packed up and moved. He had decided to attend Cameron Community College in Lawton, so they just left. Nobody talked to me about what I was going to do. I still have a problem with abandonment. I finished out the school year by staying with my great-aunt and great-uncle (he was a Nazarene preacher named Amos Coma). Their daughter Gloria married a Ponca Indian named Makes Cry, who was also in the armed services but in the Philippines.
