Indian and Chinese immigrants, their foodstuffs and other necessities were also brought into the peninsula through the port of Singapore. As a result, Asian immigrants found employment in the construction of its infrastructure and in commerce and other industries, while Caucasians were mainly engaged in administration, the armed forces, foreign trade and other non-menial works.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the developing world was closely linked to Europe and the US, thanks to the opening in 1869 of the Suez Canal, the replacement of sailingships by steam-ships and the laying of submarine cables for telegraphic communication (Ashworth 1975:61–79).
