Nevertheless it is in this area - in the perennial debate between (realist) religion and naturalism - that the main argument has to take place. For only if there are good reasons to reject realist religion is there any need to develop a non-realist alternative. Having pointed this out, however, I am not going to proceed with that debate here. 10 Realism versus Non-Realism For the distinctive contribution of the non-realist religious thinkers has not in fact been in this area: here they have simply merged with the widespread contemporary rejection of the idea of the transcendent, and evidently feel little need to offer arguments in support of it.
