These folk melodies became the basis of much of his music, transmuted with the utmost sophistication, but never academically overcerebral. A man of the highest integrity, Bartók, though Aryan (albeit with a Jewish second wife), would have nothing to do with fascism at home or abroad and refused various prizes. His last and supreme compositions were created during summers at Saranac Lake or winters in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1944, he published important studies of Serbian and Romanian folk music.
DeWolfe Howe, who liked to guide my reading in Americana, gave me a copy of his justpublished collection of Chapman’s letters. The question why such an unmistakable literary power has been so long overlooked brings the usual answer: he came at the wrong time, and those whom contemporaries fail to honor (or attack) slip altogether from the communal memory. It takes repeated efforts to reinsert the name and the work in the web of history. By wrong time, I mean that Chapman was a “cultural critic” long before the term was coined.
In his day, American self-criticism was overwhelmingly political and social. Few or none understood that preconceptions and attitudes about art, education, history, philosophy, and religion also influence politics and social life and constitute a subject to be widely discussed by capable thinkers. Now every newspaper columnist is a cultural critic. This country has not such a surplus of great critics and great letter-writers that it can afford to neglect Chapman. Jacques Barzun ohn Jay Chapman, essayist and poet, was born in New York City, the son of Henry Grafton Chapman, a well-todo stockbroker and later president of the New York Stock Exchange, and Eleanor Jay, the great-granddaughter of John Jay, the first chief justice of the United States.
