In the stories and documents, the speeches and lists of Ezra and Nehemiah, we may view the roots of much that is familiar to Christians in their community. It is essential to study the shape and formation of our roots so we may understand ourselves better. Moreover, we may find a message here of God's faithfulness with the covenant community. First with the ancient covenant community that gave birth to both Judaism and Christianity. In that faithfulness we may find comfort and look to God's ongoing presence in the midst of our own confusion and struggle for survival.

It is the first instance of exclusion in the Ezra-Nehemiah material for the sake of keeping the community separate. It will not be the last. " The entire community takes responsibility for the enterprise. The last verse conveys almost a sense of tranquillity: "The priests, the Levites, and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and its vicinity; and the singers, the gate-keepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all Israel in their towns" (2:70).
