Unfortunately it was not possible to invite papers by all who have written persuasively about Lawrence in the last twenty or so years the committee ruefully apologizes to those who may seem to have been ignored. But, as the papers which are printed in this volume demonstrate, we have little reason to feel unhappy about those we did invite: all are interesting, and several are important contributions to Lawrence scholarship. I am not a specialist in modern literature or in Lawrence, rather in Victorian literature and Charles Dickens, and so I should probably not make any (possibly ill-founded) comments about the nature of the scholarship of the papers presented during the Conference, except to say how impressed I was.
Creeley is this summer's holder of the Lawrence fellowship with residence at the ranch. I, as chairman of the committee that made the award, have come up from Albuquerque to see how they are getting along. The fellowship is one of the things that Frieda wanted to happen at the ranch she wanted some life up there and I have tried to see that her wish is realized. She is buried at the chapel nearby. In his quiet, nearly inaudible voice, Creeley introduces me to his painter friend, who turns on me that kind of steady, quizzical gaze that always makes me feel such people must know something I do not.
