In recent years, this has changed, with efforts by trade unions globally to recruit and retain women members, through the creation of women’s wings, by ensuring representation of women in decision-making structures and by paying greater attention to women’s issues (Cunnison and Stageman, 1993; Gothoskar, 1995; Kabeer, 2008; Moghadam, 2005; Munck, 1999). These efforts have resulted in some success in attracting women, particularly in advanced industrial countries. A 2006 study from the European Union reveals that 40 percent of trade union members were women (Dean, 2006: 7).
